Health Insurance - Extended Health Benefits
The Department of Health and Social Services offers Extended Health Benefits to
eligible Nunavummiut who need additional health care services that are not
covered by the Nunavut Health Care Plan.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the EHB program, you need to be enrolled with the Nunavut Health Care Plan and be one of
the following:
- a non-beneficiary 65 years or older
- a non-beneficiary Nunavut resident with a chronic disease or illness
- any Nunavut resident who has used up or does not have other health care insurance options
If you have insurance through your work or any other insurance, you must use those insurance plans before claiming from Extended Health Benefits.
Applying for EHB
You can apply for Extended Health Benefits when you:
- turn 65
- are diagnosed with a chronic disease condition
- have used up your third party insurance plan and need help paying for medical
travel

The Extended Health Benefits Program
When you apply for EHB, the Nunavut Health Insurance Programs Office will decide if you are eligible for one of the five EHB plans. EHB will send you a letter outlining your coverage plan once you are approved for coverage.
Making Claims
If you have to pay for covered services up front, you can apply for repayment
through the Health Insurance Programs Office in Rankin Inlet.
