Medical Travel for Land Claim Beneficiaries
If your doctor or nurse tells you
that you need leave your home community for medical treatment, they will set up
an appointment for you in a hospital, health centre or doctor’s office outside
your community.
If you are eligible, the costs of your medical travel will be
paid for by up to three different government insurance plans:
- Nunavut Health
Care Plan
- Non Insured Health Benefits (NIHB)
- Extended Health Benefits (EHB)
Nunavut Health Care Plan
Your Nunavut Health Care Plan will pay your airfare
less a $250 round trip deductible (co-payment) from your home community to the
nearest centre where treatment is available.

Non Insured Health Benefits (NIHB)
As a Land Claim Beneficiary you may be
eligible for the Non Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) program.
To be eligible for
NIHB, you must be recognized as Inuit by an Inuit organization.

Extended
Health Benefits (EHB)
The Extended Health Benefits program will help cover the
cost of medical travel if you are enrolled in the program.
To be eligible for
EHB, you must be a non-beneficiary 65 years or older, a non-beneficiary with a
long-term illness, or a Nunavut resident who has used up all other insurance
options.
